Whether it’s looking at organized shows or just driving through Nichols Hills, Christmas lights are the key to a festive holiday season. Cities all over Oklahoma (including Edmond) have begun their holiday traditions. Friends and family all climb into cars and cuddle into blankets to look at the beautiful lights that the community put up. Oklahoma has some of the best holiday experiences such as ice skating, tree ceremonies, The Nutcracker, and especially Christmas lights! 

Edmond’s own Luminance lights display is back at Mitch Park from Nov 20- Jan 2. Luminance features a path decorated with lights and Christmas decorations. This is the perfect spot to walk around and take pictures with loved ones. The display’s lights will be on every night from 5 pm to 10 p.m. Across the parking lot is Edmond’s outdoor ice skating rink. Surrounded by new Christmas lights done by the city. Some families this year have gone as far as making their own light shows such as the Down’s family, Giles family, and the Truitt family. 

“I went to the Luminance show with my family and it was beautiful. They had so many decorations and festive lights along the path. We even went ice skating!” said Tari Richardson.

The Oklahoma City Zoo has a drive/walk-through safari light show open this season with all kinds of animals and activities. The drive-thru experience is $60 per car and four tickets are included for the walkable activities in the Children’s Zoo and The Canopy restaurant.  Enid, Oklahoma is home to the world’s largest Christmas tree which is 75% taller than the Rockefeller Center tree and called “The One”. The tree lighting event was on Dec 4th but there will be city-wide events and activities all month long.

“My favorite place is the Miranda Lights but this year they moved to the front of the OKC Zoo. I’m still looking forward to going!” said Nikolai Perea, a sophomore at Edmond North. 

Downtown Oklahoma City is also always decorated around this time of year. There is a skating rink, a Santa’s Wonderland, and more surrounded by Bricktown’s “Downtown In December”. Light shows like Christmas in the Park (Yukon), Midwest City’s Tree, Woodwards Crystal Christmas, Kingfisher Winter Nights, and Scissortail Park are all perfect Holiday destinations. Tulsa and Chickasha also have an annual Winterfest with lights, an ice skating rink, horse-drawn carriages, and more.

Websites and apps such as christmaslightfinder.com and Nextdoor can even help find light shows based on your location. No matter what city you’re in this winter, you can find holiday activities anywhere. Holiday traditions are important especially in 2021 and Oklahoma is the perfect place to celebrate. Happy Holidays!
