Rumor has it that a list of government buildings that Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (Doge) plans to sell showed up a hidden CIA base by accident.
Bloomberg said that the site in northern Virginia was on Doge’s list of buildings to sell, but it was one of 100 buildings that were suddenly taken off the list.
Lawyers who work with real estate say that Doge wants to cut the federal government’s $5.23 billion-a-year office lease costs.
“Why are American tax dollars being used to keep empty buildings up and running?” A post from 2024 from the official Doge account says.
The General Services Administration, which is in charge of property for the federal government, released a list of 443 buildings earlier this month that it thought were no longer needed.
This building holds Obama’s official records.
Doge got rid of a lease on a building in northwest Chicago that held Barack Obama’s presidency records.
Since 2016, the National Archives and Records Administration has paid $1.4 million a year to rent the building.
Records are kept in the building, but the Obama family also put together more than 35,000 things during his eight years in office.
Many people are expected to be put on views when Mr. Obama’s presidential library in Chicago finally opens.
There is some disagreement about how sensitive the CIA building in Virginia was, since people in the area knew it existed.
It was called the “worst kept secret” in the area by Wired magazine.
According to NewsBreak, a website that lists local news stories, the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors was well aware of the building’s past.
But there was nothing on the building that said it was used by the CIA. This suggests that the agency at least didn’t want to draw attention to it or put the people who worked there in danger.
