When its engine ran out on Sunday afternoon, a chopper almost crashed on a major interstate that goes through San Diego County.
In northern San Diego County, a chopper crashed on a road that runs next to Interstate 15. It was a close call, and traffic was backed up. The northern border with Canada is where I-15 ends. It starts in San Diego County near the border with Mexico.
Police from the California Highway Patrol (CHP) and the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department were called to the emergency chopper landing on Sunday at 2:20 p.m.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the engine of the chopper broke down, so the pilot had to land on N. Centre City Parkway, which meets Jesmond Dene Road in unincorporated Escondido.
The emergency landing did not hurt anyone, but traffic on the nearby I-15 was slowed down for a short time on Sunday afternoon.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) were told about what happened and gave the CHP permission to take the chopper off the road.
