The Department of Homeland Security will no longer be a part of naturalisation events held in state, county, or city halls in places that have “sanctuary policies,” which mean that local police can’t help the federal government with immigration enforcement.
An email sent on Monday from the top of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to all field offices told workers that the agency will no longer take part in these kinds of events.
“USCIS will not participate with these state/local entities for administrative ceremonies and instead will host the ceremonies at our offices, privately-owned venues, or other federally owned/operated spaces,” it says. “If an entity located in a sanctuary city requests to host a ceremony, we request that you politely decline the invitation.”
For instance, if Los Angeles wanted to hold a naturalisation service at a library, museum, or school, USCIS would not be willing to help. This meant that the event could not happen.
The rituals are the last thing that needs to be done to become a U.S. citizen. This is where the Oath of Allegiance is said.
Fox News talked to a top DHS officer who said that sanctuary policies put people and police in danger.
“Sanctuary policies are an insult to our Constitution, they endanger all levels of law enforcement, and they leave law-abiding American citizens around the country at the mercy of violent and dangerous criminal aliens,” the people said. “America still welcomes those who come here legally and complete the naturalisation process, USCIS will simply do those at locations where the rule of law is still respected.”
A person’s chance of becoming an American citizen won’t change because of the change, USCIS said.
As part of its plan to deport a lot of people, the Trump administration has targeted towns that protect people from being deported.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is in charge of enforcing U.S. immigration laws across the whole country, but they need help from state and local governments as well. For example, they often ask local cops and sheriffs to help them find people who have been ordered to be deported.
The agency often asks local governments to hold criminal aliens in jail until federal police arrive and arrest them. Some areas, though, don’t listen to the calls and let the illegal immigrants back out on the streets.
The Trump administration wants to use government funding to punish cities that have “sanctuary” policies by cutting it off. They say this is because the cities are getting in the way of deportation efforts.
