A veteran from the Georgia Army who is 70 years old says that his VA payments were cut off.
soldier’s Affairs told Roosevelt Smith in a letter that they have proof that the soldier who is totally disabled was working and not reporting the money.
To Channel 2’s Justin Grey, Smith told him, “It’s hard to hold back tears, man, it’s hard to hold back tears.” “Someone says I’m working, but I don’t have a job.”
Smith said he got the letter telling him that his Department of Veterans Affairs benefits are being cut the day before his monthly cheque is often paid.
“I’ve lived here since 2018.” You can’t be here because you can’t pay your rent. He said, “I have nowhere to go.”
Smith has been a veteran with a total disability since 2012.
In the letter, the VA told him that the Social Security Administration had proof that he was working, so Smith called the SSA. They told him that their records show he was working at a diner 33 miles away from his home in Conyers in southwest Atlanta.
As a person who walks or uses a cane, Smith said he has never even been to that diner.
Smith said that the VA called him to say they are now looking into it after Channel 2 Action News asked them to.
“You were the only person I could talk to.” “I didn’t know what to do,” Smith told Grey.
Smith said in the letter that he had already been sent a warning letter last autumn. He said he didn’t get it.
“I don’t understand why someone from the administrative office didn’t call me before you took my money,” Smith said.
