Former Queens couple indicted for wage theft scheme targeting cleaning company workers

Queens, New York.Queens District Attorney Melinda Katz said Wednesday that a former Queens husband and wife had been charged with stealing earnings from workers at two cleaning businesses they ran.

Grand theft, illegal possession of stolen property, petit larceny, and refusal to pay wages are among the 14 counts in the indictment against Christian Perez, 39, and Ines Perez Miranda, 42, who are currently residents of North Carolina. The indictment also names both businesses connected to the couple.

Prosecutors claim that during the course of running their cleaning companies in Queens, the couple neglected to pay thousands of dollars in earned salaries to workers. Several felony counts of plan to defraud and criminal possession of stolen property are among the charges.

Targeting worker exploitation is the DA and Labor Department.

District Attorney Katz stated that the goal of my Housing and Worker Protection Bureau is to bring charges against employers who take advantage of their employees. This married couple allegedly ran two cleaning businesses and neglected to give thousands of dollars to their diligent workers.

Reiterating the DA’s comments, New York State Commissioner of Labor Roberta Reardon said the indictment makes it very evident that such abuses will not be allowed in New York State.

The New York State Department of Labor provided support for the investigation.
