Linden opens JTG Center as cooling site for residents without power

New Jersey’s Linden. The JTG Center, located at 311 Helen Street, will continue to serve residents without electricity in the face of rising indoor temperatures, Mayor Derek Armstead said Monday.

The facility provides access to phone and electronic device charging stations as well as air conditioning. City authorities cautioned that, especially for people with health issues, interior heat can become hazardous faster than outdoor temperatures.

According to the caution, indoor temperatures can quickly become deadly because they are significantly hotter than outdoor ones.

People who may be more susceptible to heat-related disease, such as elderly neighbors and those with mental or chronic health issues, are asked to be checked on by their neighbors.

The city urged citizens to call 911 in the event of a heat-related emergency and to be on the lookout for signs of heat stress.

Despite the ongoing heat and power disruptions, Linden officials are maintaining a community cooling center.
