Armed carjacker shot by police after shooting at rideshare driver in North Jersey

N.J.’s North Arlington. According to officials, a Bayonne man was shot by police on Saturday after he allegedly stole a ride-share car in Kearny and fired a revolver at the driver.

According to Bergen County Prosecutor Mark Musella, the incident started at approximately 3:51 p.m. when Kearny police, led by Chief Scott Macfie, went to a reported carjacking near Belleville Turnpike and Kearny Avenue. The suspect, 42-year-old Emmanuel Etienne, was found to have been a passenger in the ride-sharing car when he shot the driver with a revolver from the backseat. The driver was not wounded by the bullet, although it did hit the car’s interior.

After the ride-share driver managed to get out of the car, Etienne took over and drove off. Within an hour, Etienne was driving the stolen car that police found on Porete Avenue in North Arlington.

Etienne was shot by police during the confrontation in North Arlington. After receiving treatment for a gunshot wound at a nearby hospital, he was released into police custody.

Multiple charges filed

Etienne was charged with first-degree attempted murder, first-degree armed carjacking, second-degree unauthorized possession of a weapon, and third-degree firearm possession after the Kearny Police Department conducted an investigation.

While awaiting additional court processes, Etienne is being detained at the Hudson County Correctional Center in Kearny.

The police incident is being investigated by the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, which is led by Chief Matthew Finck.
