Officer opens fire as armed woman storms cops in DC standoff

Washington, DC On Saturday morning, a domestic disturbance incident turned into a standoff on Newton Place NW that lasted until an officer fired a shot and a lady was brought into custody without being hurt.

Officers from the Fourth District were called to a reported disturbance inside a house on the 600 block of Newton Place at approximately 2:20 a.m. A woman inside allegedly pulled out a gun as police tried to defuse the situation. She was repeatedly told verbally by officers to put down the weapon.

When the offender refused to comply, one officer pulled out their service weapon. The suspect was not hit by the bullet, and she allegedly moved toward officers while still armed and threatened to hurt herself.

Officers used an electric controlling device in an unsuccessful attempt to restrain her. Without incident, she was eventually captured and placed under restraint. On the scene, the gun was found.

Suspect faces multiple charges after standoff

Nashell Sowells, 43, of Northwest Washington, DC, was the suspect. She was charged with simple assault, possession of a controlled substance, destruction of property, and possession of an unregistered firearm and ammunition.

The encounter ended without any injuries. The cop who discharged their weapon has been placed on administrative leave in accordance with department protocol.

The Force Investigations Team of MPD’s Internal Affairs Bureau is investigating the officer-involved shooting, and the US Attorney’s Office will carry out an independent investigation.

The incident’s body-worn camera footage will be handled in compliance with District of Columbia law.
