A teenage suspect is in custody after stealing a running vehicle with a sleeping baby in the back seat from a gas station in Port Huron, Michigan.
According to Port Huron Assistant Police Chief Jeremy Young, the situation began with a frantic 911 call from a mother reporting her car had been stolen. The vehicle had been left running outside a gas station when the teen suspect jumped in and took off—unaware that a baby was in the back seat.
Dash cam footage captured the intense police pursuit that followed. The teenager was seen weaving through oncoming traffic before crashing into multiple parked vehicles. Fortunately, the baby remained unharmed throughout the incident.
“This was an extremely difficult situation for the deputies and the officers to be in, driving those speeds trying to resolve this situation as best they could,” said Assistant Chief Young.
Authorities revealed that the teen has a criminal history, including prior incidents similar to the events of this case.
“She was obviously emotional. She was extremely relieved. I can’t imagine what she had to be going through while that was taking place,” Young added, describing the mother’s reaction once she was reunited with her child.
The teen suspect has not yet been formally arraigned.
