A Senator From Georgia Warns of Cuts to Social Security That Will Hurt Older People

IN COLUMBUS, Ga.— A senator from Georgia is warning against the Trump administration’s plans to cut Social Security benefits, which will hurt Georgia seniors.

At a news conference Thursday afternoon, Senator John Ossoff said that he was worried that cutting staff and cutting phone service could have bad effects on Georgia’s seniors.

Ossoff says the government announced on social media that they were going to close five Social Security offices in Georgia, including the one in Columbus.

Ossoff said this about the Trump administration: “They recently announced that they will be cutting off important phone services that seniors depend on.” A new report says that the servers are so busy that the Social Security website has crashed four times in ten days this month. Because the Social Security Administration has been firing a lot of people, field managers and office managers have had to answer the phones themselves. According to the same story, the agency no longer has a way to track how customers feel because Elon Musk got rid of that office and more than 12% of the staff are being fired.

The senator also talked about his worries about Medicaid, pointing out that it pays for half of all births in Georgia and helps two-thirds of adults who live in nursing homes.

Even though both Democrats and Republicans are worried about these cuts, nothing has been done in Congress to protect Social Security. They are going to keep trying to find answers, says the senator.
