There is a beautiful bed of flowers along I-5 in Southern California. It covers 55 acres and is now open for the season.
People in California have been drawn to the Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch for decades by their amazing array of ranunculus flowers. Now, there are also other things to do there.
Ranunculus are from Turkey and are also called the Persian buttercup. Pioneer Edwin Frazee and other local farmers have made every color of the rainbow over the years by dazzling drivers and day-trippers.
They’ve been growing along the coast of California for 100 years, but it took more than 50 years of hard work to make this beauty, which is open every March. Visitors can see them in all their glory for the next five to seven weeks. Adults pay $27 to get in.
There is a “sweet pea” maze, tractor rides, a sea of sunflowers, a giant American flag made of petunias, green house orchid and poinsettia displays, a sculpture garden, and a butterfly encounter area for kids. The field is open from 9 am to 6 pm.
You can only buy tickets online, not at the event itself, and you can’t come back. There are flowers and food for sale on-site.
The last day to enter is May 11, which is Mother’s Day, and it could be a great time to go on vacation.
