LONG BEACH, Calif. – Cabrillo High School in Long Beach has apologized after a racist photo of students went viral on social media.
The picture, reportedly taken during a school assembly in the gym, showed students wearing t-shirts arranged to spell out a racial slur.
A concerned parent shared the image online, expressing outrage and frustration. He said many parents had contacted the school and district but received only vague responses. He also claimed the students involved returned to school the next day as if nothing had happened.
Civil rights groups, including Los Angeles Metropolitan Churches and Project Islamic Hope, are demanding accountability from Superintendent Dr. Jill Baker.
The Long Beach Unified School District (LBUSD) called the photo “disturbing and offensive” and issued an apology, stating that such behavior does not reflect the school’s values. The district assured the community that steps are being taken to address the situation and hold those involved accountable.
LBUSD also urged students to be mindful of the harm caused by sharing the image online and encouraged discussions about the impact of such actions.
