The Texas Highway Patrol says that one person died and another was hurt in a crash between two vehicles on FM 168 and FM 1062, about two miles north of Umbarger. According to early findings, the accident was caused in part by a missing stop sign that had been blown away.
An 2018 GMC Sierra going south on FM 168 came up to the intersection with FM 1062 around 10:40 a.m. but didn’t stop because, according to officials, high winds had blown away the stop sign the day before. The Texas Department of Public Safety said that at the same time, a 2019 Ford F250 pulling a trailer west on FM 1062 did not stop at the crossing and hit the Sierra on the driver’s side.
The Ford’s trailer came off during the crash, rolled into a ditch, and went through a barbed-wire fence.
Behind the wheel of the GMC Sierra was John Lucero, 57, from Amarillo. He was declared dead at the scene.
Silverton resident Sage Brannon, 37, was driving the Ford. He was hurt but not seriously, and was taken to Amarillo Northwest Texas Hospital.
DPS said that the Texas Highway Patrol is still looking into the matter.
