NEW YORK – The National Weather Service says that at least four tornadoes hit the Chicagoland area overnight during very bad storms.
Storms with dangerous wind gusts caused several Severe Thunderstorm and Tornado Warnings from late Friday night to early Saturday morning.
What we know
The NWS says these are the places where the four storms hit:
EF-0 in Yorkville
EF-0 in Hanover Park and Bartlett
EF-1 in Cedar Lake
Schuylerville and Merrillville have EF-0
The NWS says that damage surveys also found “multiple corridors” of straight-line wind damage in Elgin, western and northern Kane County, and eastern DeKalb County.
In some places, the wind gusts could have hit up to 70 miles per hour and did a lot of damage to homes, roofs, and other things.
Beginning around 10 p.m., the bad weather went through the Chicago area and then moved into Northwest Indiana. At 3 a.m., the last Severe Thunderstorm Warning for LaPorte County, Indiana, ran out.
What’s next?
There may have been more short tornadoes in these wind corridors, but this has not been proven.
In the next few days, the NWS plans to give out more information.
