A Farmingdale woman has died from injuries she sustained earlier this month after being hit by a cement truck, police confirmed.
The incident occurred on July 11, when a 47-year-old man driving a cement truck was traveling north on Main Street in Farmingdale. According to authorities, the driver attempted to make a left turn onto Conklin Street when he struck 69-year-old pedestrian Josephine Halby.
Halby suffered severe trauma and was airlifted to a local hospital for treatment. Despite medical efforts, she was pronounced dead at the hospital on Tuesday.
The driver of the cement truck remained at the scene following the collision. No other injuries were reported, and the investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
Pedestrian Safety Tips:
- Always cross streets at marked crosswalks or intersections.
- Make eye contact with drivers before crossing to ensure they see you.
- Stay visible by wearing bright or reflective clothing, especially at night.
- Avoid distractions like mobile phones or headphones while walking near traffic.
- Obey all pedestrian signals and traffic signs.
- Be particularly cautious near large vehicles, which may have larger blind spots and require more time to stop.
Local officials are urging both pedestrians and drivers to be extra cautious in high-traffic areas and during times of heavy construction vehicle movement. As urban areas continue to grow, safety education and infrastructure improvements remain critical to preventing such tragedies.
