DEER PARK, N.Y.Over the course of a 24-hour period, the Suffolk County Police Department’s Street Takeover Task Force detained four people and seized five vehicles as part of an enforcement operation aimed at curbing reckless driving and unlawful street racing.
Officers took a 21-year-old Coram man into custody on Friday night and confiscated his 2004 Infiniti. According to police, the man’s escape from officers during a traffic stop for speeding and dangerous driving five days prior was linked to the arrest.
The task force carried on with its activities until Saturday, when they were called by 911 to report a street takeover at the intersection of Commack Road and Long Island Avenue in Deer Park. Officers arrived, seized four vehicles, and detained three additional people.
During the enforcement actions, no injuries were reported. The names of those detained were not made public by the authorities.
Because street takeovers continue to endanger public safety and traffic flow, the department has made them a top priority.
Task force reacts to the increasing trend of street takeovers
The Suffolk County Police Department emphasized the task force’s prompt action in a social media statement, pointing out that the arrests took place in less than a day.
Since unlawful street racing and gatherings have gained more attention from local authorities and people in recent months, the task force was established to address the issue.
More enforcement actions are anticipated in the upcoming weeks, according to police, who also stated that investigations into other related incidents are still ongoing.
The department encouraged the public to keep using 911 or the department’s tip line to report street takeovers and careless driving.
