From produce aisle to $1 million Powerball payday in Maryland

Parkville, Maryland.According to Maryland Lottery officials on Monday, a Baltimore man who bought a winning Powerball ticket earlier this month transformed a simple trip to buy fruit into a $1 million payout.

On June 2, the man went to the Safeway shop located at 8858 Waltham Woods Road in Parkville. He had decided not to purchase lottery tickets after completing his shopping, but he changed his mind after hearing someone mention Powerball close to the exit. Going back to the kiosk, he bought two Powerball tickets, one Mega Millions ticket, and five Cash4Life tickets.

He found out that the same Safeway had sold a winning Powerball ticket a few days later while he was at a friend’s house. When he got home to look at his tickets, he found that one of his Powerball tickets had all five white balls matched, earning him a $1 million second-tier jackpot.

After verifying the victory, he informed his mother of the news. In his free time, officials say he likes to work out and play basketball.

Safeway earns retailer bonus for selling winning ticket

A retailer bonus of $2,500 will be given to the Safeway location where the ticket was bought. This year, Maryland has claimed two $1 million second-tier Powerball victories. On June 11, a grandfather from Baltimore County purchased his ticket in Catonsville and claimed the other.
