Gavin Newsom and the Mexican consuls in California meet to talk about new ways to work together

Last week, the heads of the 10 Mexican consulates in California met with Gov. Gavin Newsom in Sacramento “to explore new collaborations” to help Californians, including families with mixed-status members living in the state.

“It’s more important than ever that we continue to work together on important issues and partner with each other,” Newsom said on X.

Newsom met with all ten of the consul generals who represent Mexico in California last Monday. Among them were Nuria Zúñiga, the head consul of Fresno, and Christian Tonatiuh González, the head consul of Sacramento.

Newsom said, “Mexico and California have strong cultural ties and a common goal: to serve our people and help them succeed in our economies and local communities.” “Thank you to all of the Mexican consuls general in California for getting together today to make this partnership stronger.”

When asked about the meeting with Newsom, neither the Fresno nor the Sacramento Mexican consulates gave any details.

It was written on Instagram by the Mexican embassy in Sacramento that Mexico and California stood together for migrants.

The Spanish-language post said, “The Government of #Mexico reaffirms its commitment to working closely with the State of California to protect and support our migrant community.” “We thank the governor and his team for leading the way in making policies that help migrants in the state live better lives.”

The other cities in California where Mexico has consulates are Calexico, Los Angeles, Oxnard, San Bernardino, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose, and Santa Ana.

Newsom’s office said that the state talked about what it is doing to help families in California, including immigrant families, workers, and company owners.

Newsom’s office says that the state is paying for qualified lawyers to help Californians with proper immigration processes and getting federal law protections.

“We are working to make this partnership stronger so that our community can get the help, direction, and chances it needs.” The Consulate of Sacramento said on social media, “Mexico and California are working together to make the future more fair and open to everyone.”
