The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a heat advisory for nine counties in central New York, warning of dangerously high temperatures and humidity levels on Thursday, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.
According to the NWS alert released at 1:30 a.m. Wednesday, heat index values are expected to reach the mid to upper 90s, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses.
“Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses,” the NWS cautioned.
NWS Heat Safety Tips:
- Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids throughout the day.
- Stay Indoors: Remain in air-conditioned rooms whenever possible.
- Limit Sun Exposure: Avoid direct sunlight and check on vulnerable neighbors and family members.
- Protect Children and Pets: Never leave them in cars, even briefly. Temperatures inside vehicles can become deadly within minutes.
- Outdoor Activity Caution: If you must be outside, take frequent breaks and avoid strenuous work during peak heat hours.
- Time Activities Wisely: Reschedule exercise or labor-intensive work to early morning or evening.
- Know the Signs: Be aware of symptoms of heat exhaustion (such as dizziness and nausea) and heat stroke (confusion, unconsciousness, no sweating).
- Wear Proper Clothing: Opt for lightweight, loose-fitting attire.
OSHA Guidance for Outdoor Workers:
- Take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas.
- Move anyone suffering from heat stress to a cooler area immediately.
- Call 911 in case of heat-related emergencies.
