Knifepoint mugging ends with LGBTQ hate crime in New York City

New York, N.Y.A suspect in a hate crime case that happened earlier this month outside a Grove Street business in Manhattan’s 6th Precinct is being sought by police.

The incident happened in front of 80 Grove Street on Monday, June 16 at around 5:10 a.m., according to the NYPD. An unknown person went up to a business, brandished a knife in front of a 36-year-old employee, and made the employee fearful for his safety.

After removing a number of LGBTQIA+ pride signs from the company’s facade and throwing them to the ground, the suspect fled on foot. According to the police, the person is still at large after fleeing east on West 4th Street.

During the incident, no injuries were reported.

Because of the pride signs’ targeted nature and the threatening behavior demonstrated throughout the act, the NYPD’s Hate Crime Task Force is looking into the event.

Since the investigation is still ongoing, authorities have not yet made public surveillance photos or a description of the suspect.

The NYPD is asking anyone with knowledge to get in touch.
