Manchester man charged with attempted murder after beating 71-year-old mother

TWP., Manchester, N.J.After reportedly attacking his mother in a mobile home neighborhood on Friday afternoon, a 44-year-old Manchester man has been charged with attempted murder and several firearms counts, according to authorities.

According to Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer, Joseph Cavallaro was taken into custody after an incident at the Pine Acres Manor Mobile Home Community was reported at approximately 12:15 p.m. A 71-year-old woman with severe facial and body injuries was discovered by responding police.

After being taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, the woman—who was identified as Cavallaro’s mother—remains in critical but stable condition.

Investigators found that Cavallaro beat the victim during the attack with a cane. After being arrested at the site, he had a medical episode shortly after and was transferred to Toms River’s Community Medical Center. According to reports, his status is steady.

Several weapons and assault counts are among the charges.

Cavallaro faces charges of unauthorized possession of a weapon, aggravated assault, attempted murder, and unlawful possession of a weapon. After receiving medical attention, he will be placed in the Ocean County Jail for a hearing on his custody.

The attack’s motive has not been disclosed by the authorities. In cooperation with the Ocean County Prosecutor’s Office, the Manchester Township Police Department is spearheading the ongoing investigation.

As authorities continue to compile information on the assault, the victim is still in the hospital.

According to the prosecution, Cavallaro severely harmed his elderly mother by beating her with a cane.
