Trenton, New Jersey.Senator Kristin Corrado’s effort to address concerns about student-athlete harassment is progressing as legislation that would prohibit player-specific proposition bets on college sports in New Jersey passed a key committee on Wednesday.
The measure, S-3080, forbids the state’s sports betting businesses from taking wagers on the individual performances of players in collegiate athletic events. Growing allegations of online abuse directed at student-athletes prompted Corrado, a Republican who represents the 40th legislative district, to file the proposal.
According to a statement from Corrado, proposition bets have increased student-athlete harassment and jeopardized the fairness of collegiate athletics. This law will help stop that heinous practice by outlawing player-specific prop betting in New Jersey.
A proposition bet, as defined under the law, is a betting on a portion of an athletic event that is unrelated to the outcome. These wagers may consist of predictions about which player will score first or statistics performance lines.
New Jersey joins national trend limiting prop bets
A number of states, including Louisiana, Maryland, and Ohio, have lately taken action to prohibit college prop bets. The goal of Corrado’s measure is to prevent student-athletes from being singled out by gamblers who are furious over lost wagers.
After passing the Senate State Government, Wagering, Tourism & Historic Preservation Committee, the bill will now be considered by the entire Senate.
