NEW JERSEY — It’s shaping up to be one of the hottest summers in recent memory for the Garden State, with four heat waves already in the books and another one looming later this week.
According to AccuWeather and the National Weather Service, a massive “heat dome” from the southern U.S. is heading north, poised to bring another stretch of oppressive heat and humidity starting Thursday and lasting through Saturday.
Unrelenting Heat by the Numbers
While New Jersey typically sees a handful of 90-degree days each summer, some cities are already far past their seasonal averages — and it’s not even August:
- Newark: Already logged 22 days of 90°F+ temps (average is 15 for June and July combined). Four of those days hit triple digits, including a scorching 103°F on June 24.
- Atlantic City: Hit 102°F on both June 24 and 25, with 16 total 90-degree days so far (well above the seasonal norm of 12).
- Trenton: While not yet hitting 100, it reached 98°F in late June and has recorded 10 ninety-degree days, just two short of its summer average — with 10 days still left in July.
- Another Wave of Heat Coming
Forecasters say Friday could be the hottest day of the upcoming heat wave, with highs approaching the upper 90s. Although not expected to hit 100°F this time, the humidity will push “feels-like” temps well into the triple digits.
Relief Not in Sight
After a short-lived stretch of milder weather, New Jersey residents should brace for more hot and sticky conditions — with plenty of summer still left. The potential for more heat waves remains high, especially with July and August historically being the hottest months of the year.
Stay Safe in the Heat
Officials urge residents to:
- Stay hydrated
- Avoid strenuous activity during peak hours
- Check on vulnerable populations
- Never leave children or pets in vehicles
With more steamy days on the horizon, it’s clear that New Jersey’s summer sizzle is far from over.
