A 42-year-old off-duty U.S. Border Patrol agent is recovering in the hospital after being shot in the face and arm during what authorities describe as an attempted robbery late Friday night in Fort Washington Park, Manhattan.

According to the New York City Police Department, the shooting occurred just before midnight on July 19. The agent was rushed to a nearby hospital and is currently listed in stable condition.

As per reports, the agent, whose name has not been released, returned fire at the suspected assailants during the incident.

In a statement provided, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokesperson confirmed the victim is a CBP officer and noted that one of the alleged attackers was an undocumented immigrant with previous felony assault arrests and an active deportation order.

Police confirmed that one individual is currently in custody, though no charges have been filed as of Monday. Authorities have not disclosed whether additional suspects are being sought.

A video from the scene shows investigators have recovered a firearm. Officials have not confirmed who the weapon belongs to.

The NYPD continues to investigate the incident.
