Orange County Police Fatally Shoot 19-Year-Old After He Brandishes Weapon

Police say they shot and killed a man in Orange County late Saturday night who took off his shirt and pointed a gun at them.

According to a press statement from the Fullerton Police Department, police were first called to the 700 block of West Orangethorpe Drive at 11:51 p.m. for a domestic disturbance.

The person who called in said that their 19-year-old brother had a knife and swung it at their father, according to the press release.

When police arrived, they found the 19-year-old outside the house on a path and talked to him. Not following the police’s orders, he finally took off his shirt and took out “what looked like a gun” from his belt after being told several times to do so.

From that point on, the cops in Fullerton said they fired their guns.

After the shooting, police tried to save the suspect’s life until paramedics came, but the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

“A pellet gun that looked like a Smith & Wesson handgun was found near the subject at the scene,” the police said. “No one else was hurt, not even police officers.”

Later, Pedro Garcia of Fullerton was found to be the 19-year-old.

KTLA got video from the scene that shows different things lying around on the sidewalk and police questioning a man, though it’s not clear what his connection is to the event.

Aerial video of the area right after the shooting shows that there were a lot of police in the area.

Police say that the first 911 call suggested that there might have been other witnesses or victims of the suspect’s acts before the incident. If you know anything, please call FPD Detective N. Valdes at 714-738-6754. You can also call O.C. Crime Stoppers at 1-855-847-6227 and leave a confidential tip.

As is normal practice, the Orange County District Attorney’s Office is looking into what the police officers did during the incident. Detectives from the Fullerton Police Crimes Against Persons unit will also look into any crimes the suspect may have committed.

By state law, all related videos, recordings, and photos of the event must be made public within 45 days.
