Parsippany police find no evidence of immigration questioning during alleged traffic stop

PARSIPPANY, N.J. According to the Parsippany Police Department, an internal inquiry has turned up no proof that a driver was asked about her immigration status when being pulled over in the township.

The agency began a formal review after the complaint was brought up at the June 17 Township Council meeting. Internal Affairs detectives checked GPS data, law enforcement databases, CCTV and body-worn camera footage, and other sources to confirm the accusation, the agency said in a public statement.

Despite our best efforts, the investigation did not turn up any proof that any of our department’s officers had stopped a motor vehicle in our jurisdiction at this time, the statement said.

Department cites compliance with state guidelines

The Parsippany Police Department stressed that it follows departmental and New Jersey Attorney General Guidelines that forbid officers from asking about an individual’s immigration status when conducting a routine traffic check.

According to officials, the agency is still dedicated to openness and community trust and will keep following state directions about law enforcement behavior and immigrant rights.
