Teen charged with murder in deadly U Street hit and run

Washington, D.C.In relation to a hit-and-run that killed a pedestrian in Northwest Washington, D.C., last month, a 17-year-old has been taken into custody and prosecuted as an adult.

Kyree Young of Southeast, D.C., was arrested on Tuesday, June 24, in accordance with an arrest warrant issued by the D.C. Superior Court. He has been charged with first-degree murder while armed as an adult under Title 16.

The collision happened on May 7 at around 4:15 a.m. in Northwest near the intersection of 12th Street and U Street. An adult guy was discovered unconscious in a marked crosswalk by responding officers. The person was declared dead at a nearby hospital despite medical efforts.

Suspect Linked to White SUV in Investigation

The pedestrian, subsequently identified as Donnel Bracket Phillips, 55, of Northeast, D.C., was hit by a white Hyundai Santa Fe that escaped the scene, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

It took detectives more than a month to determine that Young was the driver of the car that was involved in the hit-and-run.

Charged with First-Degree Murder as Suspect

Young’s arrest is a major development in the case, which had raised community concerns because of the crash’s horrific nature and the driver’s failure to halt.
