Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas Brace for Triple-Digit Heat as Heat Dome Expands

A new heat dome of high pressure is forecast to bring intense and prolonged heat to much of the South and Midwest this week, with dangerous heat and humidity levels expected to spread into parts of the Ohio Valley, Great Lakes, and Northeast by mid to late week.

South & Mississippi Valley:

Oppressive heat and humidity will build through early next week, especially in Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Missouri, where triple-digit highs are expected for several consecutive days.

Midwest:

Starting Tuesday, hot and humid conditions will move into parts of the lower and mid-Mississippi Valleys, reaching into the Ohio Valley and Great Lakes by midweek, with widespread 90s possible.

Northeast:

Somewhat cooler conditions will linger early in the week, but hot and humid air may push into the region by Wednesday or Thursday, especially in areas closer to the Mid-Atlantic.

Heat Severity

While daily record highs are less likely, due to July being climatologically the hottest time of year, heat indices will still reach dangerous levels.

Nighttime lows in the mid to upper 70s across much of the South and Midwest will limit overnight relief, posing risks for vulnerable populations without access to air conditioning.

The heat wave may linger into the last weekend of July, particularly across the Plains and the South.

The Northeast may see some relief toward the final days of the month, though forecasts remain uncertain.
