The Social Security Administration is starting to check IDs in person

On April 14, the Social Security Administration will start requiring ID checks to be done in person for some services.

According to ssa.gov, people who need to apply for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), Medicare, or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) but can’t get to the “my social security” site can do so over the phone.

This is a change from an earlier plan that would have needed all new and current beneficiaries to show proof of name in person.

Congress, advocates, and other groups have been heard, and SSA’s acting commissioner of Social Security, Lee Dudek, said in a statement, “We are updating our policy to provide better customer service to the country’s most vulnerable populations.”

The White House says it is trying to stop scams and wrong payments with Social Security benefits, which is why this new rule was made.

47 Social Security offices are going to close this year, according to the Associated Press. Washington State does not have any of those offices.
