Thirteen People Were Hurt and Three Teens Were Killed in a Shooting in a New Mexico Park

Police in Las Cruces, New Mexico, say that a mass shooting happened at Young Park on Friday night during a “unsanctioned car show.” Three teens were killed and 15 others were hurt.

Data from the Gun Violence Archive shows that this is the 53rd mass killing of 2025.

At a news conference on Saturday, Las Cruces Police Chief Jeremy Story said that the shooting began around 10 p.m. local time with a fight between two groups that turned violent.

A Facebook post from Las Cruces Police says that three people, two teenagers and one young adult, were killed. No names have been given to the dead.

Police say the people who were hurt are between the ages of 16 and 36.

No one has been caught yet in connection with the shooting, but the post says that police are “actively following multiple leads.”

Story said that Young Park has had “trouble with crime” lately. He said that even though the cops have taken steps to cut down on crime, like locking the park at 11 p.m., “we are still struggling with that.”

He also said that cops had taken handgun-caliber shell casings from the scene. The number of people hurt was changed from 14 in the original Facebook post to 15 by Story.

At the news conference, Michael Daniels, the fire chief of Las Cruces, said that seven of the hurt people had been sent from local hospitals to El Paso for more care. Four people have been treated and sent home. He said that no one knows what’s going on with the other four cases.

At the news conference, Las Cruces Mayor Eric Enriquez said, “Today is a sad day for our community.”

“All I want to do is ask the people of our city to come together, stand strong, and be one as we try to heal and deal with this terrible event,” he said.

The killing shocked and broke the heart of New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham.

The governor also said that she was “mobilizing state resources to support local law enforcement in their investigation.” She also said that compared to last year, violent crime in Las Cruces has gone up by 46%.

In an Instagram post on Saturday, Johana Bencomo, a Las Cruces City Councilor and Mayor Pro Tem, called the killing “a horrible act of violence that will make our city mourn.”

She wrote, “My heart is broken for the victims and their families.”

About 41 miles north of the border between the US and Mexico is Las Cruces, which is on the edge of the Chihuahuan Desert.
