HAMPSTEAD, MD
— A morning collision involving three vehicles on Route 30 in Carroll County left two people dead and three others seriously injured, Maryland State Police confirmed Friday.
Troopers responded to the Hampstead Bypass around 7:48 a.m. after receiving reports of a major crash. Investigators say a Ford pickup truck traveling southbound crossed into the northbound lanes for unknown reasons, striking a Chevrolet dump truck. The impact pushed the dump truck into a Chevrolet pickup truck.
The driver of the Chevrolet pickup truck was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger in the dump truck was transported by ambulance to Carroll Hospital Center, where they later died. Authorities are withholding the identities of the deceased pending notification of next of kin.
The driver and a second passenger in the dump truck, along with the driver of the Ford pickup truck, were flown by Maryland State Police Aviation Command to R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore with injuries.
Crash shuts down Hampstead Bypass for five hours
The collision closed portions of Route 30 for approximately five hours as crews worked to investigate and clear the scene. Responding agencies included the Carroll County Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services and the Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration.
The Maryland State Police Crash Team is leading the ongoing investigation. Officials have not released any further details regarding the cause of the crash.
