Prom season!

Flowers are a sign of love, and there is nothing like receiving flowers that makes you feel special and seen. However, the prices can be out of reach for an average high school student. With prom coming up, everyone is dreaming of a perfect (and expensive!) evening, and the costs can add up quickly. Luckily, you can still have beautiful flowers without breaking the bank.

Start with a dozen roses from Walmart for just $7.98 to create any of these amazing prom options.

Handmade Prom Corsage

If you want to go the classic route, here is a cheap way to make something beautiful for a fraction of the price.

  1. Prepare just a few (2-5) flowers by cutting the stems around half an inch, removing all thorns and unnecessary leaves
  2. Grab floral wire and tie it around the stems together
  3. Add some green leaves (or you could spring for baby’s breath) to the base of the flowers
  4. Attach ribbon to the base of the flowers and tie a cute bow, leaving enough ribbon for the wrist.

Florist total cost: $49.95

DIY total cost: $11.98

If you are a crafty person and want your flowers to last forever, you should try making ribbon flowers. This is a unique way to show your prom date that you care to put the time and effort into making them something different.  All you need are three rolls of  1.5 inch ribbon, a hot glue gun, wooden sticks and flower wrapping paper

Here are the steps to make this one-of-a-kind bouquet.

  1. Take the 1.5 inch ribbon and wrap it around a credit card 25 times
  2. Cut the ribbons on both sides
  3. Fold the ribbon each side into triangles and glue it down with your glue gun
  4. Now fold it again into half so the point is inwards
  5. Glue all of the pieces together in a line
  6. Stick the wooden stick onto the end of the line and roll it inwards
  7. Your single rose is ready and make more of it until you have a full bouquet
